Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
I went independent in November of 2013, but have been in the financial services industry since April of 2000.
What is your primary product or service?
The service is comprehensive and consumer-oriented financial planning. As for the products, they vary for each client. For some it's an IRA mutual fund portfolio, for others it's a life insurance policy or an annuity product. The array of financial products utilized are just the tools I use to help find the solution.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I've been interested in financial planning and especially personal budgeting for as long as I can remember. In high school, friends would read sports magazines or car magazines, while I read personal finance magazines and books on investing. I guess you can say I had a "knack" for it. People use to talk to me about finances because they found the advice I gave them to be very helpful. Eventually, I choose to pursue it as a career. After working for a few companies, eventually I decided to go out on my own. That way I didn't have the added pressure of selling any proprietary products.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
There's two things that make us different. First is that for all clients, we take an educational and consumer-orient approach. I make it clear upfront, that I sit on your side of the table, not the company's. I work for you and your family, not for some insurance or investment firm. The second thing that makes us different is our specialty or "niche". Our niche is in helping people who are between 10 to 15 years from retirement, specifically full social security age. Now, we have that exact date to work towards, at the very least. What makes us different in this arena, is that we're very good at creating predictable non-volatile lifetime retirement income, and we're very good at utilizing various estate planning strategies to minimize the potential tax liability that you're heirs may encounter.
Which areas do you service?
We service all of New Jersey, but we're currently focusing our marketing efforts in Bergen County and Passaic County.
We make house calls too, since most clients have all their financial documents at home or at their office, that's where the appointment will end up being. It's more convenient for the client that way.
What are your hours of operation?
Availability for appointments is between the hours of 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday.
The first appointment meeting generally lasts no longer than an hour. The subsequent appointments can vary.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Either a referral for an appointment to meet someone that they are good friends with, or a testimonial which they'd like for me to post on my website.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
I got two!
For estate and legacy planning - from the Old Testament - Proverbs - chapter 13 verse 22. "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous."
For financial planning - from the New Testament - Luke - chapter 14 verse 28. "For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?"
